Background & Human Impact
In Bangladesh, an unexpected severe illness or emergency hospitalization is often the single most catastrophic event that pushes vulnerable, working-class households below the poverty line. Private hospital admissions require heavy admission deposits, bed charges, continuous nursing fees, and endless medicine invoices that destitute families cannot possibly afford.
To provide a dependable lifeline for those with nowhere else to turn, Mohammed Tajul Islam instituted a permanent charity quota of inpatient beds at Shilmoon Specialized Hospital. Under this policy, ultra-poor individuals facing acute or chronic health crises are admitted to fully equipped hospital beds with absolute zero billing throughout their stay.
