Background & Human Impact
In Bangladesh, thousands of infants are born annually with cleft lip and cleft palate congenital anomalies. For impoverished families, this condition brings severe challenges — infants struggle to nurse, facing acute malnutrition, chronic infections, hearing loss, and lifelong speech impediments alongside social isolation.
While reconstructive pediatric surgery can completely rectify these anomalies early in life, private hospital operation costs and specialized anesthesia remain out of reach for daily-wage families. To eliminate this financial barrier, Mohammed Tajul Islam instituted Programme "Smile" at Shilmoon Specialized Hospital, providing expert surgical correction, inpatient care, and speech therapy with absolute zero economic barriers.
